Baxter Youth
Conservation Corps
The Baxter Youth Conservation Corps is a job training and service-learning opportunity for youth from the Katahdin region of Maine. Since 2017, this program has been hiring local youth for full-time summer employment doing trail work in Baxter State Park. Participants gain valuable training, job skills, and work experience in a spectacular wilderness setting.
We are hiring for up to 16 youth trail crew positions for 2024! This year’s BYCC season will run from June 17 - August 9. Crew members will now sign up to work with the BYCC for either the entire 8-week season, OR only part of the season (2, 4 or 6 weeks). Currently enrolled students and homeschoolers from Stearns, Schenck, Katahdin, or Southern Aroostook high schools or Mattanawcook Academy, are eligible to apply as well as recent graduates of these schools (from 2022 and 2023) and seasonal residents of the Katahdin Region between the ages of 15 - 19 who live in Maine year round. Trail crew positions pay a starting rate of $17/hr, with a $1/hr raise for every year of experience in the program.
We are proud to announce that the 2024 BYCC is receiving support from the
Maine Outdoor Learning Initiative!
American Rescue Plan Act GEER, Reverted EANS Funding received from the USDOE supports the implementation of this project. The project has an award totaling $6.6 million dollars of which 100% is federally funded and directly attributed to project implementation. Our BYCC Conservation Fellows program offers youth from the Katahdin Region the opportunity to pursue paid leadership and conservation work and independent study. This program is similar to a college-level internship. Fellowships will be offered to those with exemplary leadership skills, motivation, and career interests in the outdoor recreation, conservation, or environmental fields. Because of the degree of independence required, Conservation Fellows must be juniors, seniors, or recent graduates (2022-2023) of Stearns, Schenck, Katahdin, or Southern Aroostook high schools or Mattanawcook Academy.
